University of Split

The University of Split was officially established on 15 June 1974 when the units having already had an effect in their professional, scientific and teaching areas entered its structure.

As a predominant scientific and teaching public institution in the region the University of Split has expanded during the course of the past 50 years to include eleven Faculties, one Academy of Arts and four University Departments. There are about 20,000 students enrolled in the University’s undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programs.

In the framework of European projects, contacts have been made with the leading European universities, but also with universities from other continents. University successfully participates in the Erasmus programme – the biggest student, academic and administrative staff exchange programme.

Faculty of Maritime Studies – Lead partner in this project

The Faculty of Maritime Studies (FoMS) in Split was founded in 1959. Originally, it began its activities as Maritime College, while since 2004 it has been functioning as the Faculty of Maritime Studies of the University of Split. Education at the FoMS is carried out at undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 2019 FoMS has also begun to deliver postgraduate, PhD study.The scientific/research work is carried out within projects funded by the European funds and programs, by the state budget and internal projects.

Training and education of seafarers at FoMS is aligned with the requirements of the Ministry of the Sea, Traffic and Infrastructure, and in compliance with the requirement we have developed the quality management system ISO 9001. FoMS is a member of IAMU (International Association of Maritime Universities) with whom FoMS has aligned its curricula. Due to FoMS experience in the education of high-quality maritime personnel, the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia has entrusted FoMS with initiation in 2018 of the education of cadets for the Croatian Army, Coastguard of the Republic of Croatia, Ministry of the Interior, and NATO partners of Croatia. The cadets are educated at the integrated studies of naval nautical studies and naval marine engineering. Scientific and research work done on FoMS is disseminated through the international scientific conference IMSC – International Maritime Science Conference, and international scientific journal ToMS – Transactions on Maritime Science, founded and organized by FoMS.

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law in Split is a public higher education institution within the University of Split, which in the field of legal sciences organizes and conducts: integrated undergraduate and graduate university studies, professional studies and postgraduate studies.

The Faculty of Law in Split was founded in 1961. Excellent university teachers and associates and experts from practice participate in the scientific-teaching process at the Faculty of Law.

One teacher from the Faculty of Law, Split participates in the Erasmus+ project MareLaw. Full prof. Petra Amižić Jelovčić, PhD, who is the head of Institute for Commercial and Maritime Law.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split is a public higher education institution that organizes and conducts university and professional study programs and develops scientific and professional work in several scientific fields. The Faculty is focused on the education and scientific production of experts in social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary sciences. Built on the rich cultural, artistic and humanistic tradition of the Mediterranean and Dalmatian environment, the Faculty is a pivotal site for developing humanities and social sciences in this area.

Riga Technical University

Riga Technical University (RTU) – Latvian Maritime Academy is a state-founded institution of higher education and also the first and only institution in Latvia to provide higher maritime vocational education and training for the maritime industry. It was founded in 1989. The RTU aims to provide students with a balance of academic education, professional training and practical skills in order to respond to a wide spectrum of needs in the maritime industry. It educates highly qualified seafarers in the technical areas of navigation, marine engineering, marine electrical automation, ship mechanics and port and shipping management. The RTU also trains officers for the Latvian Navy.The study process is based on the standards set out by the STCW Convention. In June 2001, the RTU was accredited for the whole period of its activity. The RTU also has a research institute. The activities of the Research Institute are organised in multiple working groups made up of both the research fellows employed by the Institute and highly qualified academic staff of the Riga Technical University.
